So what is it actually for? The answer is storytelling. A cleanly painted tank can be technically lovely, but a tank shot through the corner, sooted up and rusting actually says something. That's exactly why battle damage is one of the most dramatic forms of weathering, and it usually comes as the final stage of painting.

It also helps to know up front that this is a mid-to-advanced technique. If you learn the individual pieces (chipping, soot, rust) on their own first and then combine them, you'll move through it far more comfortably.

How does it work?

At its core, battle damage is several weathering techniques stacked on top of each other around one logical scenario. Its believability rests on four simple physical rules:

  • Impact direction: Bullet and shrapnel marks deform in the direction they came from. Metal crushes inward and the edges flare out. So as you plan, ask "where did the hit come from?"
  • Heat and soot: Explosions, muzzles, exhausts and burn zones produce soot (black-grey smoke residue) and heat staining (a blue-purple-yellow colour shift in metal). The key point: these appear only where things actually got hot.
  • Layered damage: First a scratch, then chipped paint, then exposed metal, then that metal rusting, then soot on top. When those layers stack, the eye reads the damage as something that happened over time.

How do you do it, step by step?

Battle damage is an order of layers; break the order and the effects smear over each other. That's why, once the model is fully painted, you should follow this sequence:

  1. Set a scenario. Before anything else, ask: how did this model get hurt? Small-arms fire, an explosion, a collision? Place the damage accordingly, because without a scenario everything looks random.
  2. Physical damage (optional, advanced). If you like, add real cuts, holes or melting with a hobby knife or a heated tool. Go slow on plastic; this step can't be undone.
  3. Chipping and scratches. Apply heavy chipping to the damage zones. In deep chips, show the metal or rust underneath.
  4. Bullet marks. Make small craters and holes. Aim for a dark centre (the hole), a bright metal rim (freshly exposed) and soot around the edge.
  5. Soot. Apply black-grey soot around explosions, muzzles and burns with an airbrush, drybrush (dry-brushing) or pigment; keep it dark in the centre and soften it outward.
  6. Heat staining. On exhausts, muzzles and heated metal, build a blue-purple-yellow heat tint with transparent glaze (translucent layered) passes.
  7. Rust and streaks. Add rust around the exposed metal, and rust streaks running downward from it.
  8. Finish. Seal it with a matte varnish at the end. Soot and burns should be very matte; you can leave a few fresh metal spots slightly glossy.

Which paints and brushes?

The good news is that battle damage needs no special product; it's about using the weathering paints you already own in the right order. A typical kit looks like this:

  • Chipping colours: Dark metal grey and dark brown tones, plus one lighter shade for a sharp fresh-metal highlight.
  • For soot: Black-grey; an airbrush or black pigment gives the cleanest result.
  • For heat staining: Transparent blue, purple and yellow, applied in thin translucent layers.
  • For rust: Orange-brown rust tones and pigments.
  • Tools: A fine detail brush, a sponge (for chipping), an airbrush (for soot gradients) and a pigment brush. For advanced physical damage, a hobby knife or heated tool.

  • Random damage everywhere. Covering the whole model in marks looks overdone and illogical. Instead, tie the damage to the scenario and the exposed surfaces.
  • A single layer. Only scratches, or only soot, reads as shallow. Layer it instead: chip, then metal, then rust, then soot.
  • A flat dark bullet hole. One dark dot isn't enough. The bright metal rim and the soot around the outside are what actually give the crater its realism.
  • Heat staining in the wrong place. A blue-purple tint on a panel that never got hot jars instantly. Heat staining goes only where things really heated up.
  • Hard-edged soot. Sharply bordered soot looks fake; it should be dark at the centre and soft toward the edges.

Experienced painters treat battle damage as narrative, not technique. Here are a few rules that hold up:

A little accurate damage always beats a lot of careless damage. Photos of real battle-scarred armour are the best teacher.
  • Tie the damage to one sentence. A single scenario like "this vehicle took a hit on the front-left corner" makes every effect you add automatically logical.
  • Respect the layer order: physical damage, chipping, exposed metal, rust, soot, heat staining. That order tells the history of the damage in sequence.
  • Use reference. Look at real combat damage and battle-scarred armour. Memory lies; photographs don't.
  • Soften soot last. If it's too heavy, break up the edges with a clean dry brush.
